Karl Stern was named after the name of the emperor. Many boys of the class of 1917 were baptized in the name of Karl. Karl Stern grew up in Neustift in Stubaital on a farm. In the large parlor twenty people were sitting around the dinner table. The children had nothing to say. Life is shaped by the rituals of a Catholic farming family. Karl grew up in nature. He has a good-hearted mother and a strict, well-educated father. Karl is sent as a soldier for Russia. He then comes to the Western Front. At the end of the war, he is considered missing. No one expects the expatriate. He finds work at customs. In 1947, he leads Jewish refugees who secretly crossed the Alpine passes.
